Trojans Shoot Down the Arlanda Jets, 10-0

10.05.2004 klo 14:37

The Turku Trojans first EuroBowl game was played on Saturday, at the Velodrome Stadium in Helsinki. The visiting team was the Swedish Champion Arlanda Jets. The Trojans are currently ranked 6th in the Euro Top 20, while the Jets are ranked 8th.

Although the final score was only 10-0, the Trojans dominated their opponents throughout the game, and had plenty of scoring opportunities. The Trojans' running back Teemu Paukkula scored the only touchdown of the game, early in the first quarter. Paukkula's 13 yard scoring run capped a well balanced drive that included several long pass completions by quarterback Mike Horton to receivers Antti Palmroos and Juha Suoniemi. Place kicker Jukka Satola converted the extra point to make the score 7-0, which was also the score at half time. Late in the third quarter, Satola was successful again, this time with a 34 yard field goal. This ended up being the final score of the game.

The Trojans' defense kept Jets' quarterback Stefan Axelsson in check, limiting him to just four completions on 14 attempts, for a mere 36 yards passing. The Jets running attack faired better, gaining 183 yards on 37 attempts, with Axelsson accounting for 69 yards on the ground. The Trojans' linebacking corps of Janne Salonen (game MVP) and Ilja Redin were excellent against the Jets' running game.

Trojans' quarterback Horton threw 36 times, completing 15 passes for 299 yards and one interception. Receiver Juha Suoniemi had six receptions for 138 yards, while receiver Antti Palmroos finished with four catches for 104 yards.  Before being injured late in the game, running back Teemu Paukkula had 17 rushing attempts for 131 yards and the lone TD.

The game also featured 18 penalties (nine per team), showing that there is still some work to do for both teams before they get into their game rhythm.

The Trojans will travel to Moscow next weekend to face the Moscow Patriots on Saturday. The final game of the first round will be played on 22 May, when the Patriots face the Jets.
