The Trojan defense found Helsinki Wolverines running back Stephen Stokes was too hard to handle. The former Bergamo Lions player scored 5 touchdowns, demolished the Trojans 55-22 (8-28) and gave his team hope to make it to the playoffs.
The Trojan quarterback Jayson Davis missed the first three quarters because he was getting his injured shoulder examined. Danny Andersson was subbing him but the team was a bit sluggish as they no longer had a chance to catch up with this season’s top teams in the league. Davis did come back and do well in the last quarter, but the cause was lost at that point.
The Wolverines’ Stephen Stokes scored no more than three minutes into the game. The 34-yard dash was followed by Antti Leino’s successful PAT attempt and the visitors were in the lead. 0-7. Johnell Wyatte did even better and scored on an almost 60-yard run. The Wolverines managed to block Janne Stenberg’s PAT, but the kicker just calmly picked up his ball and took it in on foot. 8-7.
The visiting team’s QB Cameron Coffey passed a TD-scoring long pass to Hannu Abonce towards the end of the 1st quarter. Another long run by Stephen Stokes took the Wolverines to a 8-21 lead before the 2nd quarter. The halftime score was 8-28 after Stokes was able to deliver a third long run so far. The home team, on the other hand, had got very few reasonable chances to score so far.
Only one TD was scored during the 3rd quarter. Stokes again. 8-34. Jayson Davis got back from magnetic imaging in the beginning of the 4th quarter, after which the Trojans would start playing a more pass-heavy offense. The Trojans scored two more touchdowns (Johnell Wyatte, Jayson Davis). The home team’s efforts bore little fruit, as the visitors organized their own little event in the Trojan end zone. Hannu Abonce scored two more touchdowns and Stokes made his fifth one in the game. The final score was 55-22.
The statistics go a long way in explaining this game’s result. Stephen Stokes rushed 20 times for 216 yards total. More than 10 yards per attempt is a feat and a half. Combine that with Hannu Abonce catching three pass TDs and things begin to look clear enough. The most valuable players were RB Stephen Stokes and LB Kalle da Silva from the Wolverines and our own men Jayson Davis and Juha Yli-Arvela. Trojan LB Ilja Redin and DL Martti Valimaa deserve a special mention for their actions in the tackling department.
